Original Canine Portraits

Dr. Terry S. Collett

These original works of art were created with the highest quality waxed base colored pencils on 100% acid free, neutral pH Canson Mi Tientes paper.  The color is lightly applied pencil stroke by pencil stroke in many layers and colors onto the highly textured paper.  Approximately 30 colors were used in various methods of underpainting, layering and burnishing to create each dog from photographic reference material.

These paintings take many weeks to complete as the complexity of the colors and detailed texture of a dog’s coat, require careful and painstaking application of the color.  Each pencil stroke must be applied with the sharpest tip of the pencil, in a fashion as to not flatten the tooth of the paper, yet to fill each honeycombed surface with the color.  Many translucent colors side by side and layered are mixed by your eye as you stand back and look at the design.

After the work is complete it is sprayed lightly with a fixative.  Even this is delicate work because if applied too heavily, the fixative can run or even change the original colors.

Each original work will be signed by the artist and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.  This piece should be matted and framed in acid free materials and covered with glass to protect the work.
